Danbury Public Schools Announces Their 2022 Teacher Of The Year
Posted on 05/25/2022
Emily Lopes, 6th-grade Bilingual Teacher, has been named Danbury Public Schools Teacher of the Year.

Lopes has been a teacher in Danbury for 22 years and currently works at Rogers Park Middle School, where she is known for her dedication and enthusiasm.

“As the Rogers Park principal, I have been very impressed with the dedication and enthusiasm Ms. Lopes brings to her work. Her support of our new arrival students and their families has created a warm and welcoming environment that lays the foundation of a positive school experience,” stated Dr. Kristy Zaleta. “Her classroom is one of the classrooms we send new teachers to watch and learn from, as well as veteran teachers to get new ideas of how to utilize time, space, data, and resources effectively.”

Throughout her career, Lopes has shown her ability to connect with her students and build long-lasting relationships with families. Parents and students alike come back to her years after they have left her classroom to seek guidance or support. Lopes is not only a welcoming face for families, but she is also an advocate. Lopes goes above and beyond to ensure students' and their families needs are met; always including her role in that solution.

“Choosing just one teacher was a tremendous challenge, we have some amazing teachers here in Danbury,” stated Superintendent Kevin Walston. “Over the last two school years, teachers are expected to not just teach, but manage the aftershocks of the pandemic, like trauma, learning loss, and social isolation. We are extremely proud of Ms.Lopes, her dedication to her students' and families' social-emotional and academic well-being is inspiring.”

Lopes is 1 of 20 Danbury Public School educators nominated for Teacher of the Year. Lopes will go on to represent Danbury in the Connecticut Teacher of the Year Program. Lopes will also be honored by the Board of Education on Wednesday, June 8th, during their 7 PM biweekly meeting.
