Technology Competencies

These are the skills that all middle schools students are
expected to have mastered by the time they graduate from 8th grade.
Each year teachers in all grades are expected to teach/review the
skills that have been identified in their areas. However,
all teachers need to be very familiar with all of the technolgy
literacy skills because there is a great deal of overlap. All
curriculums include the use of technology as an everyday tool. The
list below is a starting point for the assigned area, However, all
teachers and all students should become proficient over time with all
of the skills.
Skills for LA/ Reading
Students will effectively use technology to:
- Easily retrieve, manipulate, edit, and
backup saved information from network and disks
- Continue to improve keyboarding skills
- Continue using formatting skills in their
computer generated work (including tab settings, margins, etc)
- Use spell checker, thesaurus, cut, copy,
and paste editing tools
- Use hardware and networks in a responsible,
ethical manner
- Add graphics to document by using the
clippings library
- Add graphics saved from the Internet to a
document
Skills for Math
Students will effectively use technology
to:
- Use a variety of appropriate data to set-up
and organize the information into a spreadsheet.
- Use spreadsheet data to create appropriate
charts and graphs.
- Use hardware and networks in a responsible,
ethical manner
- Create and incorporate information from
databases and spreadsheets into reports
- Use calculators and scientific instruments
appropriate to curriculum
- Use technology skills to solve problems,
interpret, synthesize, analyze, and evaluate information
- Understand terminology relating to
technology they use (Internet, database, spreadsheet,
telecommunication, multimedia, LCD,CD-ROM, etc)
- Add graphics to document by using the
clippings library
- Add graphics saved from the Internet to a
document
Skills for Science
Students will effectively use technology
to:
- Identify database terms
- Use hardware and networks in a responsible,
ethical manner
- Use technology skills to solve problems,
interpret, synthesize, analyze, and evaluate information
- Create and use a database to organize,
retrieve, and print data in a report
- Share information with other students to
facilitate collaborative projects
- Add graphics to document by using the
clippings library
- Add graphics saved from the Internet to a
document
Skills for Social
Studies
Students will effectively use technology
to:
- Use tools to integrate imported sound,
video, and CD-ROM information into multi-media presentations
- Use hardware and networks in a responsible,
ethical manner
- Use multimedia applications to create
presentations that organize, display, and share ideas.
- Create clear presentations which require
research from a variety of sources (CD-ROM programs - research and
curriculum based, Internet, etc), and skillful
delivery
- Understand terminology relating to
technology they use (Internet, database, telecommunication,
multimedia, LCD,CD-ROM, etc)
- Add graphics to document by using the
clippings library
- Add graphics saved from the Internet to a
document
