Student Bill of Rights
Expectations of Students in Our Schools
We expect all of the following from you as a student in our school:
- We expect you will represent our school in an outstanding manner.
- We expect you will work to the best of your ability.
- We expect you to treat others with dignity, worth, and respect.
- We expect you will keep our school beautiful and clean.
- We expect you will obey all the rules and regulations set forth by your teachers and the school.
- We expect you will work to keep a positive relationship between yourself, your parents, your teachers, and your friends.
- We expect you to reach beyond your grasp to learn new things.
- We expect you will make all of us very proud.
Student Bill of Rights
The students in our school deserve to learn and play in the best environment we can provide. Accordingly, all staff and students will make every effort to observe the following.
Students in our school have the right to:
- Learn in a disruption-free environment.
- Know what is expected of them at all times in every area of the school.
- Be protected from verbal abuse.
- Have their positive behavior recognized.
- Have their personal property protected.
- Have their concerns heard.
- Be treated with kindness and caring.
School Daze
Homeroom
Each student is a homeroom period which meets everyday from 7:50 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. During this time, attendance will be taken and announcements relating to school activities will be made. It is imperative that all students be in school during this homeroom period.
Textbooks
Students will be issued textbooks in each of their classes. All textbooks are numbered so that accurate records can be kept. It is the student's responsibility to make sure that his/her books are covered and kept in good condition. A fee will be charged at the end of the school year for any lost or damaged books. Final report cards will be held until all fees are paid in full.
Passes
Students are expected to obtain a pass when they must be in the halls during class time. Passes may be issued by staff members.
Student Lunches
Students may purchase a variety of nutritious lunches and snacks in the school cafeteria. Any student who is eligible to participate in the free or reduced lunch program may obtain the necessary forms from the central office.
Dismissal
Students are not permitted to leave school grounds without permission from the central office. Requests for early dismissal of a student require a written request from a parent or guardian. These requests should be first taken to the appropriate administrative office. We recommend that parents, however, try to schedule doctor and dentist appointments after school hours. In the event of a family emergency or an early dismissal, parents or guardians are required to sign out their child before any student may leave the building. Early dismissal for an illness may be given by the school nurse. Parents will be notified and must normally provide transportation.
Securing Your Stuff
Lockers
All students will be issued a locker at the beginning of the school year. It is the responsibility of each student to make sure that he/she does not give other students his/her combination. The administration, therefore, discourages students from sharing lockers. The administrative office will maintain the records of locker assignments and combinations.
A student's locker may be inspected if the administration has a reason to suspect that it contains dangerous and/or illegal items.
Valuables
Students are discouraged from bringing valuable items or large sums of money to school. If you must bring in valuables to school, please contact your assistant principal, or principal so that the item can be put in a secure place. Everything possible is done to safeguard private property, but the school cannot be responsible for lost or stolen property.
Electronics
Personal radios, tape decks and other electronic devices are not permitted in school. Such equipment will be confiscated.
Lost & Found
Lost and found items should be placed in, and retrieved from any of the administrative offices.
Technology
Networks
Both of our middle schools use Networks to deliver all computer programs. To get onto the network, you must log in. Depending on what your parent has requested, you will then receive the programs on whichever computer you are logged into.
Your password protects your documents. Protect it! Do not share it with others!
When you are using the computer, your behavior is subject to the Conduct Code:
* use only your log-in and password
*
your computer must be turned so that the adult in charge can see the screen
* stay only on approved sites; if you accidentally come to a site that is inappropriate, please tell the teacher in charge.
AUP (Acceptable Use Policy)
An AUP is a legal document which your parent must sign to give you permission to use the Internet. It also has boxes for your parent to check for you to have your picture, work, and/or first name displayed on the school's web site. Connecticut law requires us to have a signed AUP before you are allowed to connect to the Internet. If you do not have one, you will be able to type on computers, but not use the Internet until your parent signs the paper.
Day is Done?
Extra Curricular Activities
Students are encouraged to participate in extra curricular activities. Check in the central office and listen to Morning Announcements to find out what clubs and activities will be offered during the year.
The "C" Requirement
Students who plan to participate in any extra curricular activity, including sports must maintain an overall "C" average for the courses completed in the marking period preceding the sport or non-sport season.
After School Program
The school district operates an after school program in the middle schools. The program, supported by a grant from the State Education Department, is a collaboration between the school system and the Community Resource Center . The program begins in October and operates for two sessions: fall and spring. The program begins right after school dismissal and runs until 4:30p.m. Monday through Friday. It offers a range of classes including sports, personal grooming, arts & crafts, computers, and homework assistance, to name a few. Transportation home to identified drop-off points is provided.
Need Extra Help?
Contact your subject area teacher to arrange for an extra help session. Homework is a very important part of a student's education. It is an extension of the classroom work which usually demands organization and self-discipline. We encourage you to immediately set up a scheduled time and place in which homework is done everyday. Extra help is also available as part of our after school program.
