Transform Your Teaching


Interactive Whiteboards are supposed to be INTERACTIVE. Yes, you can project a movie onto a screen or have a student come up to the IWB to solve a math problem, but we MUST move beyond doing old things in old ways.


Here are some suggestions to ramp up your 21st century teaching and learning with Interactive Whiteboards!


  1. ✤ Use the IWB as a station for small groups: Once rules are established, make the IWB a rotating center as part of small group work. Have students take control, work collaboratively, and use the IWB productively!

  2. ✤ Get the pen out of your hand: The IWB is not for YOU. Have students navigate, manage, and learn how to use the board as part of daily life.

  3. ✤ Don’t put it on a pedestal: Don’t make the IWB a “special time of the day”. Make it seamless. Use it all day, every day. Really integrate the board into EVERYTHING you do.

  4. ✤ Use the IWB for things other than math:

  5. ✤ Open PDFs, images, or live feeds from doc cameras to edit, underline, and make Writer’s Workshop come alive.

  6. ✤ Keep a class journal on a science experiment-take photos, make notes on top of the image, and make available on your website for students to show adults at home

  7. ✤ Take a virtual field trip around the community or world with Google Earth or other virtual field trips from the Interactive Whiteboard presentation found above!
