Message From the Principal-

The winter months bring about many changes in weather, holidays, and special events.  As we enter this busy season, it’s important to take time to reflect upon all the things we value and appreciate.

Here at King Street Intermediate School, we are grateful for many things.  We are appreciative of our supportive parents, our staff characterized by talent, commitment, and pride in providing a challenging and supportive learning environment, and our P.T.O.  Most importantly, we are especially appreciative of our children, who brighten and enrich our lives everyday!

As our school year progresses forward, students will be engaged in activities, educational programs, and assessments that align to our new District and School’s Outcome Achievement Plan.  This plan focuses on the improvement of teaching and learning through the development of goals, interventions and curriculum implementation aligned with instructional improvement in reading, writing and mathematics with a heightened emphasis on closing identified achievement gaps.

One critical component to develop all successful learners is to encourage a passion for reading a variety of genres.  As a result, please encourage your child to read daily.

To foster opportunities for community awareness and promote our school’s team spirit, students and staff are acknowledging one charity a month to support.  As a result, students may wear school colors and teachers may donate a dollar to wear jeans  every Friday in support of a cause or charity.  During the months of November and December, we are supporting Juvenile Diabetes. All proceeds will go to this charity. Children and adults are invited to contribute to the KSI “Haiti Fund”.  Our collection will continue through the end of January.  Pennies, nickels, dimes, or dollars are all welcome, and will be put to good use.

A Note on Connecticut Mastery Test Preparation:

Every year, beginning March 1st, the Connecticut Mastery Tests (C.M.T.), are administered to all third, fourth and fifth grade students.

As you may know, it is important for all students to do their best, and for our school to ultimately attain adequate yearly progress, as mandated by the No Child Left Behind (N.C.L.B.) Law.

To that end, during the months before testing, students are immersed in both Danbury’s “Learning Tree” curriculum, which aligns with the C.M.T. skills, in addition to test preparation strategies and skills.  To help all students demonstrate their highest potential of skills during the C.M.T. sessions, each grade level has planned to focus on additional academic learning time in reading and math.

Specific outlines of these plans were sent home as an insert in your child’s Interim Report Cards.

As always, home support in terms of healthy habits, good nutrition, good attendance and adequate rest before tests are taken, help to increase your child’s potential to do their best on every test.  As everyone knows, reading for a variety of purposes at home as well as in school advances your child’s potential as a successful learner.
