Delay Announcements The decision to delay the opening of school or to cancel school because of inclement weather is made by the superintendent. The primary consideration is that ot the safety of students and staff. The decision is governed by a number of factors. To help make the decision, the superintendent seeks input from the Police Department, the Public Works Department, the School Maintenance Department, the school bus contractor, local meteorological services, and from residents located in various sections of the district. There are times when available information dictates that a delay in the opening of school is appropriate and other times when the schools should not be opened. Delays may be called for 90 minutes. The decision will usually be made by 6a.m. and all announcements will be broadcast on the following stations:
