February 2012

Happy February! We are off to a busy month so far. Please read on for some tips and tricks!

  1. BulletHave you restarted your laptops lately? Remember, restarting will help refresh many of the your laptop’s processes. Also, when something is not working, the first thing to try is to restart!

  2. BulletI have been around to classrooms helping teachers with new tools for technology. Remember the use of the technology tool itself is not the project...it’s the essential questions and higher-order thinking that makes students learn. Any student can find a state rock in a quick search...but how does that state rock reflect the geological history of the state? Or has that state rock affected the economy of the state? Maybe it became an exported item that spurred on economic growth. MAKE STUDENTS THINK, SYNTHESIZE, and  INTERPRET

  3. BulletPlease be aware that students should be searching the Internet using the Safe Search Tools and Images Archive. State content filtering blocks many inappropriate websites in district. Remember that we cannot block everything so monitor students during Internet use and use teachable moments if a student does come across an inappropriate website or image.

21st Century Learning

Take your teaching to the next level. You don’t like to be “talked at” so why should kids? Take your teaching into the 21st century by using project-based learning activities. Integrate all of your classroom subjects to strengthen learning and skills. Don’t forget to give students choice!

Want to get started but don’t know how or don’t have the time? Start with these 10 Takeaway Tips for Project-Based Learning from Edutopia. Then email Stephanie at fieles@danbury.k12.ct.us to get some help on planning! Technology is supposed to get students engaged and excited about learning so let me help get you started!

Quick Tech Tip:

Teachers often ask me where I find the stuff I show them.

Simple answer-I search for it.

You don’t need to spend hours trying to figure out a program, find an interactive tool, or find a page chock-full of resources. Chances are, somebody had the exact same thought or question as you, and somebody had an answer to that person.  Need help finding something? Let me know and we can search together.

Don’t Forget to keep sending me your student’s work! I would like to add to the BBAC Boards and update the Technology Timeline! Email to me at fieles@danbury.k12.ct.us or tell me to stop by your room so I can pop them on a flash drive!
